Round 28 of the German Bundesliga took place this past weekend, after the quarterfinals of the national cup competition, but more on that later.
The league continued on Friday evening as Mainz 05 took on SC Freiburg in an encounter between two sides that most likely have nothing left to play for this season.
They have both accumulated enough points to distance themselves from the relegation places, while not having nearly enough quality to play for more.
In a highly efficient performance, Mainz won 5-0 with three of those goals coming from striker Jean-Philippe Mateta .
On Saturday afternoon, Eintracht Frankfurt cemented their place in the top four of the Bundesliga, by beating Schalke 04 2-1 with a Luka Jovic penalty deep into added time.
RB Leipzig came from behind to defeat Bayer Leverkusen 4-2, thus increasing the likelihood of their place in next season’s Champions League, while forcing Bayer into no-man’s-land of the table.
In the relegation six-pointer of the round, VfB Stuttgart stood firm to earn a valuable 1-1 draw vs Nuremberg, keeping the Bavarian side four points behind them in the automatic drop zone.
Meanwhile, Fortuna Düsseldorf who gained promotion to Bundesliga 1 together with Nuremberg last season, has no such worries. The team from the Rhineland overcame struggling Hertha BSC Berlin 2-1, to amazingly move into mid-table.
VfL Wolfsburg beat Hanover 96 3-1 to give themselves a reason to dream of the Europa League, while dooming their opponents to relegation.
On Saturday evening, the most anticipated game of perhaps the entire season took place as Bayern Munich faced Borussia Dortmund at home. It was only the hosts who controlled the match, winning 5-0 thanks in large part to a four-goal bonanza in the first half.
The gravest danger for Bayern now comes from the fact that that huge victory over their rivals in the title race might give them a false sense of security. They are now only a single point ahead of Dortmund in the table after all.
On Sunday TSG Hoffenheim hammered FC Augsburg 4-0, as Borussia Mönchengladbach and Werder Bremen played to a 1-1 draw.
That same day, the German Cup semifinals were drawn, resulting in a home game for Bremen against Bayern and the same for Hamburger SV vs.Leipzig.
