After two weeks off for the international break, the German Bundesliga finally returned to action this past weekend, for its third round this season.
It all began with a Friday evening showdown between Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt.
It was a night for new BVB heroes, as Abdou Diallo opened the scoring them late in the first half. Meanwhile, Sebastien Haller equalized for Eintracht, just about halfway through the second forty-five minutes.
That brought the match to life. Soon after it, Marius Wolf, the former Frankfurt man bit the hand that used to feed him, 2-1 Borussia! Substitute Paco Alcacer, newcomer and Barcelona CF loanee put the game out of reach for the reigning German Cup winners for the 3-1 final score.
It meant that Borussia Dortmund spent the night on top of the Bundesliga table, the place onto which Bayern Munich stormed back on Saturday afternoon. They came from behind to beat Bayer Leverkusen by the same 3-1 score.
The Bavarians paid a hefty price for the victory, losing both Rafinha and Corentin Tolisso to bad injuries in the process.
Elsewhere, RB Leipzig secured its first victory of the league season by overcoming Hanover 96 3-2 and Mainz 05 came from behind to defeat FC Augsburg 2-1.
VfL Wolfsburg and Hertha BSC Berlin who both had perfect starts to the Bundesliga, drew 2-2, as Fortuna Düsseldorf shocked TSG Hoffenheim 2-1.
On Saturday evening, Borussia Mönchengladbach pushed Schalke 04 deeper into crisis by beating them 2-1 as well.
Finally on Sunday, 1.FC Nuremberg earned a 1-1 draw vs. Werder Bremen, and SC Freiburg drew VfB Stuttgart 3-3 in a spectacular game in which Jerome Gondorf and Mario Gomez particularly stood out with each getting a brace for his team.
That last match , in which two teams with terrible starts to the season put on such fireworks, speaks volumes about the league.
