Bundesliga round 22 review and German Cup news

Bundesliga round 22 review and German Cup news
After an interesting midweek of domestic cup quarterfinal action (to which we shall get later), German clubs returned to their day-to-day, “bread-and-butter” competition, the Bundesliga this past weekend. The league’s matchday 22 began last Friday with an encounter between teams with European ambitions, as RB Leipzig hosted FC Augsburg and defeated them 2-0, despite not always playing their best. That result put the Saxon Bulls into second place for the time being. On Saturday afternoon Borussia Dortmund also beat Hamburger SV 2-0, regardless of early difficulties. Elsewhere, TSG Hoffenheim overcame...

Bundesliga round 18 review and German Cup draw results

Bundesliga round 18 review and German Cup draw results
The shortest German Bundesliga winter break in years came to an end this past weekend. Matchday 18 started on Friday, as Bayer Leverkusen hosted Bayern Munich, putting their unbeaten run since September to the test against the champions. That streak came to an end, as the Bavarians went home as 3-1 winners when all was set and done. On Saturday afternoon, Werder Bremen snatched a point from TSG Hoffenheim in their 1-1 draw for the former’s fight against relegation. SC Freiburg did likewise against Eintracht Frankfurt, with the same score. Elsewhere, FC Augsburg delivered a blow to Hamburger SV’s...

German Cup round of 16 review

German Cup round of 16 review
The last event before the winter break in Germany, was the round of 16 of the German Cup. It provided plenty of drama and excitement, but very little in terms of the usual upsets in the competition. The matches took place last Tuesday and Wednesday with two each being played at the same time. On early Tuesday evening, VfB Stuttgart seemed in complete control against Mainz 05, when they led 1-0 and had a penalty minutes into the second half. They missed the spot kick, and minutes later Mainz was 2-1 up after two set piece goals. The 05ers added a third goal toward the end for good measure from a...

Bundesliga round 10 review and more
Matchday 10 of the Bundesliga season took place this past weekend, after the second round of the German Cup had been played the Tuesday and Wednesday before that. The Cup was somewhat short on surprises, but certainly not on drama.SC Paderborn was the only Third Division team that prevailed. The few second-tier teams that advanced to the Round of 16, did so in games against teams from the same division, or as in one case against a Third Division team. The two winless teams in the Bundesliga, namely 1.FC Cologne and Werder Bremen surprisingly advanced in cup play with impressive victories against...

Coach Jupp Heynckes to come out of retirement to take over Bayern Munich for the season

Coach Jupp Heynckes to come out of retirement to take over Bayern Munich for the season
Bayern Munich confirmed on Friday, what many rumors over the last few days hinted toward. The 72-year-old Jupp Heynckes will coach the crisis-ridden Bavarian giants until the end of the season. It will be his fourth time coaching the German record champions and the second time after 2009, that he will be dragged out of his retirement to do the job. He is the most successful coach that Bayern has ever had in its history full of trophies and glory. Jupp Heynckes was the architect behind the team’s 2013 treble success, which is the combination of winning the Bundesliga, the UEFA Champions League and the...
