This past midweek, both UEFA club competitions continued with the second set of Champions League Round of 16 first legs, as well as all of the second legs of the Europa League round of 32.
It began on Tuesday, when Liverpool FC hosted Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
The Bavarians fought in an exemplary fashion to achieve a scoreless draw in a traditionally difficult place to play. But despite these positives, we must also not forget that there were plenty of negatives as well.
First of all, Bayern’s focus on defense was very much at the expense of their offensive play. Thus, their lack of an away-goal forces them to have to win at home, in the second leg, in order to advance.
In that game in Munich, they will have to go without the services of key player Joshua Kimmich, due to yellow card suspension.
Lastly, the Bavarians did not play a perfect defensive game at Anfield either, as Liverpool players created and missed a few sitters as well.
Meanwhile, Olympique Lyon also drew CF Barcelona 0-0 . It is highly unusual that on a night of two UEFA Champions League matches, both end goalless. Particularly, when such top offensive lines as those of Barcelona, Liverpool and Bayern are involved.
On Wednesday, there were plenty of goals. Especially in Schalke 04’s home game vs. Manchester City. Sergio Aguero gave the Citizens an early lead. Just before halftime, the Royal Blues got two penalty kicks in quick succession. Nabil Bentaleb scored from both, giving Schalke a 2-1 shock lead.
Despite the fact that Nicolas Otamendi was sent off for a second yellow card deep in the second half, Schalke remained defensive.
Then, Leroy Sané punished his former team, making it 2-2 from a free-kick. At the very end, Raheem Sterling punished a Schalke defensive collapse, to give City the 3-2 away-victory.
In the other game that night, Atletico Madrid beat Juventus Turin 2-0 at home ,via late goals from José Gimenez and Diego Godin.
Thursday was UEFA Europa League day. Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Shachtar Donezk 4-1 to advance and Bayer Leverkusen drew FK Krasnodar 1-1, and was eliminated on away-goals.
Frankfurt will face Inter Milan at home first in the Round of 16.
