The quarterfinals of both UEFA club competitions are now set, so we first look back at the Round of 16 that took place this past midweek. Particularly at the disaster that the German teams in the Champions League had to endure. Later, we can focus on both quarterfinal draws.
The Round of 16 of the Champions League continued on Tuesday. The matches were Manchester City vs. Schalke 04 and Juventus Turin vs. Atletico Madrid.
In the game in Manchester, the Royal Blues put on an inexcusable and unforgivable performance, losing 7-0 on the night and 10-2 overall. It is of course true that City is a world class team and that Schalke is struggling to avoid relegation in the Bundesliga, but there was no effort on the part of the S04 players to avoid a debacle.
Elsewhere, Juventus overturned a 2-0 first leg deficit by beating Atletico Madrid 3-0, thanks to three goals by Cristiano Ronaldo. Atleti almost never attacked their opponent’s goal in the entire match.
On Wednesday, Bayern Munich took on Liverpool FC, while CF Barcelona faced Olympique Lyon.
The Bavarians were far too defensive, almost inviting Liverpool’s attack onto them in Munich. The EPL title contenders’ 3-1 triumph was well-deserved and the logical consequence of this tactical blunder on the part of coach Niko Kovac. Defending deeply is simply not in Bayern’s DNA, especially not at home.
In the other game of the evening, Barcelona had far too much quality, hammering Lyon 5-1.
Thursday was UEFA Europa League day, and German Cup winners Eintracht Frankfurt added Inter Milan to an impressive list of clubs they knocked out of Europe this season by beating them 1-0 on the night and overall. Eintracht is now the only remaining German team involved on the continent.
The quarterfinal draw for both UEFA club competitions took place on Friday. For the Champions League it was Liverpool – FC Porto, Tottenham Hotspur-Man.City, Ajax Amsterdam-Juventus and Man.United -Barcelona.
In the Europa League it was Benfica Lisbon- Frankfurt ,Arsenal FC-Napoli, Villareal-CF Valencia, and Slavia Prague-Chelsea FC.
