The German teams representing the Bundesliga In European competitions this season, had a mixed bag of results in the respective group stage draws for the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League on Thursday and Friday.
The seven teams include the best seven league finishers of last year’s Bundesliga season. Four of those, namely Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen will participate in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Borussia Mönchengladbach, VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt will compete in the Europa League.
Domestic league winners Bayern have been drawn into UCL Group B, where they will face last year’s finalists Tottenham Hotspur along with Olympiakos Piraeus as well as Red Star Belgrade.
Despite it including the side from North London as well as two potentially uncomfortable underdogs, this is a relatively favorable group for the Bavarians to play in.
It can be easily asserted that Dortmund on the other hand, has been drawn into the most difficult group of this season’s Champions League. They will face Barcelona, Inter Milan along with Slavia Prague In Group F of the competition.
Bayer Leverkusen will play Atletico Madrid, Juventus Turin and Locomotive Moscow, in an almost as difficult Group D.
Leipzig had the arguably most favorable draw of the four German teams with Benfica Lisbon, Olympique Lyon, as well as Zenit St. Petersburg in Group G.
In the Europa League, Borussia Mönchengladbach has clearly the most difficult opponents of the Bundesliga trio. They will face AS Rome, Istanbul Basaksihir and Wolfsberger AC of Austria in Group J of that competition.
VfL Wolfsburg has seemingly much easier tasks in KAA Gent, St.Étienne and Ukrainian club FC Olexandria in Group I.
Last but not least, Eintracht Frankfurt has strong opponents in Arsenal FC, Belgium’s Standard Liege and Vitoria SC of Portugal in Group F.
With that, I wish best of luck to all German teams involved!
